Good Friday:
This Service of Darkness commemorates the Suffering and Death of Christ and is based on the ancient Tenebrae dating from the 8th century. Tenebrae was originally celebrated on Wednesday, Thursday, and Friday of Holy Week. It represents the darkness that fell over the earth as the Son of God was crucified. The candles symbolize Christ, who is our Light and the Light of the world. During the service the candles are progressively extinguished, portraying the fading Light of the world as Christ is leaving it. However, the Christ Candle will remain lit to remind us that Jesus entrusted his soul to his heavenly Father and his body was not abandoned to the grave. Through faith in him we share in the light of life.
Our service tonight will follow the pattern of reading a portion of the Passion History followed by a reading of a Psalm and silence for personal reflection. The gospel writers recorded what happened to our Lord and the psalmists give us insight into the heart and mind, the agony and sorrow, and most importantly of all the confidence of our Savior even as he suffered and died for us.
